The guest list sounds like the most bizarre party you've ever been invited to: Rebecca Black, Scumbag Steve, Occupy Wall Street protesters, Nyan Cat and a few hundred bronies. Then you see what kind of party it is: the Best Memes of 2011, hosted by the internet-culture obsessed folks at Know Your Meme.
The meme database pulled together 10 internet moments that ruled the web for the Best Memes of 2011 list -- five chosen by the editors of the site and five chosen by the community.
For their favorite memes, the editors picked YouTube sensation Rebecca Black, the flashmob protest style of Occupy Wall Street, the text-captioning joke (and Twitter hashtag) "first world problems," the weird fad of planking and Scumbag Steve.
The Know Your Meme community, however, gave the nod to five much more Reddit- and 4chan-worthy memes. Their picks included the excellent fandom of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic-loving bronies, the photo-captioning of '60s Spider-Man, the ever-awesome Nyan Cat, hyperbolic X All the Y drawings and the "Nope! Chuck Testa" meme.
That's a lot of memes to digest, but all are totally legit and would probably make our list of best memes. What do you think? Did they miss any great memes? Are there any on this that miss the mark? Hit the comments and let us know what memes you think rocked 2011. Or, if you like, just post LOLcats.
